Four-year-old Angel lives with her nine-year-old sister and their 32-year-old father in a small house in the mountains. Her mother, Janice, works as a housekeeper in the city several hundred kilometers away and she is only able to come home around once a month. Maria’s father, Nick, takes care of them and does all of the household chores. Janice’s income is barely enough to provide for the entire family.

Food For Every Child Stories

Stories is an ongoing segment within our organization, which aims to document some of the compelling narratives of those that we all help. Each story follows the situation of several children, their families, and their communities to help people understand the scope and impact of our work.

A Father's Struggle

Nick used to work as a construction worker but was forced to stop due to severe asthma attacks. Because of this, his wife had to find a way to support the family. Nick does sometimes take on odd jobs to help supplement their income. However, Nick said that taking care of his daughters is his number one priority since his wife is not around.

It is a struggle to put food on the table. We can only afford to buy a bit of rice and maybe some fish on most days

Fighting To Put Food On The Table

A typical day for Nick involves waking up early to cook food for his daughters. He then helps them prepare for school. The two attend classes at a government-run school three kilometers away from their home. Nick walks his daughters to school every day. He does all the laundry and other household chores during the rest of the day before walking back to his daughters’ school to fetch them.

“I am willing to do anything to ensure that my daughters get a good education. I just want them to reach their dreams. But I worry that what I and my wife are making wouldn’t be enough to even feed them.”

Nick explained that there were days when they would be forced to skip meals as they would not have enough money to buy food. He added that it breaks his heart when he has to explain to both of his daughters why they don’t have any food on the table.

I never want them to feel hunger. But this is a reality for us

How We are Helping

Following our initial assessment of Angel’s situation during one of our feeding programs, we immediately conducted a secondary assessment to determine the appropriate steps to take.

We listed the family as one of the beneficiaries of the food bank we had established for their community. The family receives a subsistence of one food box and a sack of rice each week. Angel is also being provided with a supply of vitamin supplements.

We also conduct private seminars with the parents to educate them about the proper preparation of nutritious meals. We are closely monitoring the two sisters and conducting follow-up visitations.

How You can Help

Your donations enable us to continue supporting children like Angel and their families. Every dollar you give goes towards providing food for these children. This allows them to focus on just being children instead of having to worry about going hungry.

You can make a difference by helping Angel and children like her struggling with hunger.
